On Super Death

Or, Being Old Is A Shit Excuse

My nephew recently linked me to an album that he thought I'd appreciate. We've have our moments connecting over music; he introduced Death Grips, I introduced Refused, he doesn't "get" Blacklung, I only enjoy one song from that Tired Minds EP. Sometimes we hit, sometimes we add to the intergenerational confusion.

The album is Noise Breeder by Super Death - it has me curious. I keep returning to it during various moods, sometimes I feel a catharsis, sometimes I hear a pianola reading a QR code. Ultimately, this artist brandishing glitched-out post-hardcore is becoming the sound of how i seethe at MyGov when the answer to my security question is wrong due to a capitalization, the sound of my dense and asphyxiating boredom when people project their insecurities on social media. The sound of my self loathing when I can't remember a 6 digit two-factor-authentication code from less than a second ago due to social media ruining my short-term memory recall.

Whether it be plunderphonics, glitchcore or digital hardcore, they all have this similar affect on me. It's like a sonic storm of electricity and perverse nostalgia, a reflection of the chaos and turmoil of our single use plastics and screen-captured degradation. Which does play into my latent punk (which has never been fully expressed); I love rock music, that basic fucken drivin' beat with 3 chords gets me keen and idealistic even at the most inconvenient times - i also want to fuck it up and make fun of it and create something bogus.

The more erratic, abrasive and chaotic these arrangements become the more they give off an air of unseriousness, but Super Death is screaming their heart out - To the point where it kinda touches on emo sensibilities - yet ultimately, Super Death doesn’t give a fuck and will tell you directly. And nor should any fucks be given, I can hear that the album is meticulously  crafted - so stand and deliver it with pride. Mediocrity is for the half-arsed, Noise Breeder is tightly produced.

I shared these thoughts with my nephew and he asked "Yeh, but do you like it tho?"

I want to - But i'm too old or i think i’m content with Refused and Death Grips (I have mentioned these references yet?). The kids will strive and seek novelty and find belonging within it all. And, Super Death will likely embody all this for them. The heavy bits are heavy, Let’s Be Violent is beautiful despite its gothic atmosphere and How It Feels has a slappin' mid-tempo groove an ol’boy like myself can actually move to - However, I don’t live in Super Death’s world, my time in angst is tied to the music that soundtracked it, my years for breakneck genre-mashing were ‘98 and 2011.

I shared these reasons with my nephew and he responded “Being old is a shit excuse”.

I asked my nephew what he thought about Noise Breeder, the response “Yeh, it’s hectic and sounds like he’s punching the fuck out of an ableton push but thats why I love it!!”
